The Daily Grind: Want realism with that?

Filed under: Economy , Opinion , The Daily Grind Recently, a buddy and I were discussing the merits of MMORPG realism while waiting in the ironically named fast food drive-thru line. I’m all about the “realistic” social and economic possibilities inherent in old-school Ultima Online , while he digs the accessibility and pick-up-and-play nature of more recent titles such as World of Warcraft and, presumably, The Old Republic . About the only thing we could agree on is that there’s room for both in the massive genre.

Turbine expands on LotRO’s Lua scripting

Ever since hearing the news that Turbine will allow players to create mods for Lord of the Rings Online using the Lua programming language , the community’s been abuzz about what this means for LotRO — good and bad. Would this allow for the creation of game unbalancing add-ons, or perhaps the rise of a LotRO edition of WoW’s controversial GearScore

One Shots: Zoooooom!

Filed under: World of Warcraft , Fantasy , Screenshots , One Shots Looking for a fun, fast way to get around? Well, if you were to offer us a wicked-looking rocket-powered jet ski — especially one like this with the head of a shark emblazoned across the front — we certainly wouldn’t turn it down

The Virtual Whirl: Ill-repute

Virtual environments have a generally poor reputation in many quarters, particularly in the mass-media. Much of that reputation is ill-deserved, and some of it is entirely fabricated (eg: by the mass-media). I have to ask, what’s the big deal

The Road to Mordor: Frolicking in Forochel

Call me weird, but I am an absolute sucker for winter zones in MMORPGs. For me, the season of winter always evokes a lot of powerful feelings as the landscape is transformed, homes are a sanctuaries for warmth, and hardiness becomes a desirable trait.

Free for All: Remembering my first F2P experiences

I sit here, racking my brain, trying to think of the very first free-to-play game that I experienced. It’s been quite a long time, at least seven years. As a quick history, I started in MMORPGs in ‘99, by bringing home a box of Ultima Online for my wife to look at

The Daily Grind: Real ID disaster averted… or is it?

Well, it’s all over after all. The evil dragon released by Blizzard has been slain by Blizzard again , after several days of people alternately cursing and staring slack-jawed in disbelieving horror. We can all go back to slaughtering Internet Dragons again, and the privacy issues are dealt with forever

Blizzard not yet ready to slaughter the cash cow and go F2P

It seems like the subscription-free bug has been catching on lately. Turbine experimented by rolling Dungeons and Dragons Online over to free-to-play, and saw their players (and revenue) jump appreciably. Now Turbine is taking the next step by rolling their triple-A MMO, Lord of the Rings Online , over to the same model.

Disillusionment with MMOs

Because I never studied nor considered studying psychology, you may doubt my words, but I will still tell you that many people go through a phase in life in which things become less shiny for them.
