Those of you who are currently playing Final Fantasy XI or who have played it in the past will remember the PlayOnline Viewer . Those of you who haven’t will have no idea what it is, which might be for the best. Square-Enix originally included the program with the launch of Final Fantasy XI with the expectation that it would serve as a hub for a variety of different online games, so it would serve as a chat program, a launcher, a social network hub, and a support site.

Back at the end of Novembe r, we talked about the ongoing security issues affecting Guild Wars players. ArenaNet has been assuring players that they are working hard on the problem, and Monday evening the community saw the first fruits of that labor. Players saw a message in their chat windows that most of them have never seen before: “The Guild Wars servers will be taken offline momentarily for required maintenance.” It was a quick change, but once it happened, players logging in saw a surprising addition to the login screen.
